Pilot boat Wulpen sails out in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. This pilot boat has Ostend (Belgium) as home base but is also active in Dutch waters. A pilot boat is a boat that brings a pilot aboard a seagoing ship. The pilot boat sails at sea, on a fixed position, this is called a cross post.
The tasks of the pilot go back to classical antiquity when local fishermen helped bring incoming ships safely to shore. The oldest reference to pilots comes from the 7th century BC. Afterwards, pilots were appointed by the port authorities to ensure that pilotage was regulated, that there were competent pilots and that the captains of ships had sufficient assurance that the pilot was competent.
