Pilot boat Wulpen returns to base in Vlissingen, Netherlands. This pilot boat has Ostend (Belgium) as its home base but also operates in Dutch waters. A pilot boat is a boat that brings a pilot on board a seagoing vessel. The pilot boat sails at sea, at a fixed position, this is called cross-post.
The pilot's duties date back as far as ancient times when local fishermen helped bring incoming ships safely to shore. The earliest reference to pilots come from the 7th century BC. Afterwards, pilots were appointed by port authorities to ensure that pilotage was regulated, that there were competent pilots and that ship captains had sufficient assurance that the pilot was competent.
