The history of the Pieterkerk in Leiden, recorded on this work frontally from the front, goes back to the year 1100. The church is named after its patron saint, the apostle Peter to whom the key to the kingdom of heaven was given. The present building dates from 1390. The fact that Leiden is called the city of keys is therefore related to the church named after Peter. This work can be ordered in both color and black and white.
About the city of Leiden: Leiden is an old city with a lot of history. The undisputed oldest part is the Burcht which dates from 1150. Probably the castle is much older and possibly there was a defensive structure as early as around 450 AD. The Old Rhine River flows through Leiden and discharges further on into the sea. Thanks to the cloth industry, Leiden was one of the largest cities in the Northern Netherlands from the late Middle Ages until the 17th century. Leiden was also the site of the first protestant church, the Marekerk with its round dome.
