About ‘Peasant boys, Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky - 1916’

Nikolay Petrovich Bogdanov-Belsky (near Smolensk, December 8, 1868 - Berlin, February 19, 1945) was a Russian painter.

Bogdanov-Belsky learned to paint icons at the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra and later studied at the art academies in Moscow and St. Petersburg. At the end of the 19th century he worked for a period in Paris. After that he worked mainly in Riga.

Bogdanov-Belsky is a typical genre painter, especially of peasant scenes, portraits and impressionistic landscapes. He was a member of the painter's group The Wanderers and of the Archip Koeindzji Society, of which he was also chairman from 1913 to 1918. In 1914 he became a member of the St. Petersburg Art Academy and started teaching as well.
