They stand out within the large family of pheasants (Phasianidae) by their colored plumage and the large ornamental feathers of the males. In contrast to the colorful appearance of the male, the female of the blue peacock is inconspicuously colored. In the green peacock, the distinction between the two sexes is smaller. The peacock is probably the oldest known ornamental bird.
