Light and shadow play hide and seek between the stone pillars of the Portico de La Lavandera (The Laundry Room Portico) in Parc Guell, Barcelona, Spain. With its tree trunk like colonnade supporting branching vaulting under the roadway, walking on this column framed footpath feels like taking a stroll through the woods. As many of architect Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces, Park Güell is free-flowing, full of curving natural organic forms. It is a reflection of his artistic naturalist phase from the beginning of the 20th century.
The park was originally part of a commercially failed housing complex commissioned by Count Eusebi Güell and influenced by the English garden city movement. It was built between 1900 and 1914 on the hill of El Carmel in the Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona, Catalonia, but far out of the city center at the time. It has since been converted into a municipal garden and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudi".
