At 1 860 km, the Orange River is the longest river in South Africa. The river is sometimes called the Gariep or Great River. The river was named by the Dutch explorer Robert Jacob Gordon after the House of Orange-Nassau.
The river originates in the Drakensberg Mountains near the border between South Africa and Lesotho. The Orange River flows westwards, first through Lesotho and then on the border between the provinces of Vrystaat and Eastern Cape, across the province of Northern Cape and finally forms the southern border between South Africa and Namibia, before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay, about halfway between Walvis Bay and Cape Town.
