The Castelo de São Jorge or the Castle of Saint George is Lisbon's most famous castle in Portugal. It is located on the highest hill in the city and overlooks the wide Tagus River (Rio Tejo). It is one of Lisbon's most famous tourist attractions. The foundations of the castle date back as far as the 6th century BC. In 1147, the castle was captured from the Moors during the Siege of Lisbon.
As a royal palace, the castle was the scene of the reception for Vasco da Gama when he returned from India. King Manuel I received him here in 1498 as a national hero. It was also here that the budding playwright Gil Vicente first performed his Monólogo do Vaqueiro in 1502 in honor of Manuel I's son and successor, João III.
From the castle one has a wide view of the city. This is also where I took this beautiful panorama!
