Since 2008, Shanghai has been upgrading its infrastructure in many ways, including an additional ring road, the construction of an extensive metro network and improvements to its railways and ports.
It was also decided as part of urban expansion to establish nine satellite towns in the One City, Nine Towns project, building a Dutch-inspired district of Gaoqiao (Holland Village (Shanghai)) with copies of famous buildings and waterways.
Located on the East China Sea (part of the Pacific Ocean), Shanghai is bisected by the Huangpu River, which is part of the Yangtsekiang river delta. West of the river is Puxi, where the old city centre is located, and east of the river a new modern financial centre has been set up in Pudong.
