Wyck is Maastricht's east bank along the river Meuse. Wyck is called 'Wiek' in the Maastricht language. Yes, language. Maastrichtish is a kind of Limburg dialect but one that qualifies as a language. Beautiful and juicy in the ear and a pleasure to speak it. The language I prefer to speak as a born South Limburger with original Maastricht roots.
The Saint Servatius Bridge is the oldest bridge in the Netherlands, Roman in design and proudly bridges both city banks. The painting shows the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin and the iconic buildings of the former city brewery De Ridder. Today, it is once again home to a brewery called Stadsbrouwerij Maastricht, which brews truly fantastic and unique beers. Mother Meuse is feared but certainly cherished by the Maastricht people. Wiek is a gorgeous district with über French appeal; nice boutiques, cosy restaurants and, last but not least, the renowned art museum Bonnefanten.
