Pando is an ancient, massive aspen "tree" in central Utah that is actually a single, genetically identical organism consisting of over 40,000 stems connected by a shared root system. This colossal clone, Latin for "I spread," is the world's largest and heaviest living organism by mass, estimated to weigh around 13 million pounds and cover 106 acres. While each stem has a lifespan of about 130 years, the underlying root system could be thousands of years old, dating back to the end of the last ice age.
