The otter belongs to the marten family, it lives in riparian zones with adequate cover and rest. They mainly hunt fish and small invertebrates, it has a highly developed nose (1,000 times stronger than humans) and very sensitive whiskers. In many parts of the world, otters have completely or partially disappeared from their natural range. Because some otters are key species that keep their ecosystem in balance, many conservation programmes've already been set up or initiatives launched to strengthen populations through reintroduction. The otter had disappeared in the Netherlands but has been reintroduced since 2002; it is currently found again in large parts of the Netherlands.
