About the artwork

In the beautiful Renaissance gardens of chateau de Villandry in the Loire, you will find this vase with fruit. It is one of 2, standing symmetrically on a bridge overlooking the chateau.
The Loire is famous for its quantity of châteaux and although I have visited many, I found this one to be the most beautiful, especially because of its beautiful gardens.
We were there on a sunny June day in 2025. It was quiet in terms of visitors, so it was lovely to wander around and take pictures.
The top of the fruit in the vase is beautifully in sync with the battlements of the castle, which forms the background of this photo.
Villandry's gardens were redesigned between 1908 and 1916 by Joaquin Carvallo, a Spanish doctor who bought the chateau in 1906. Inspired by the 16th-century French and Italian garden tradition (from which the castle and original gardens originated), he designed the gardens according to historical sources.
The urns, whose maker is unknown, are in keeping with the Renaissance style and refer to classical symbolism: fertility, abundance and man's connection with nature.
These are not original 16th-century pieces. They were added in the 20th century in style with the rest of the gardens.
