Spotting and photographing these Orcas in the wild was a dream come true for me. Although there is a good chance of spotting Orcas along the coast of Vancouver Island (with a special whale safari), it is still exciting whether they actually show themselves, they are still wild animals. And it is so surreal to see them suddenly emerge above the water. The guide could identify them by their markings and scars and so she was able to tell us all about the animals. This picture, with the whole school of orcas and the town of Nanaimo in the background is ultimate for me, and allowed me to capture another one of Canada's wonders.

Orcas, or killer whales, are iconic marine mammals known for their striking black and white colour pattern and impressive appearance. Their high intelligence, complex social structures and spectacular movements make them fascinating creatures. To many indigenous cultures along the Northwest coast of North America, orcas have deep spiritual significance and are seen as symbols of strength, family and protection. Orcas are also ecological ambassadors, as their presence reflects the health of marine ecosystems. For photographers, orcas offer both challenges and rewards, with capturing their acrobatic movements and dramatic colours leading to stunning images. Artists draw inspiration from their majestic presence and mysterious nature, so orcas often appear in paintings, sculptures and other art forms. Their appeal contributes to awareness and conservation efforts, making them a favourite subject for artists and photographers alike. Orcas embody the beauty and fragility of the natural world, further enhancing their popularity.
