The Vaartsche Rijn was built in the first half of the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, potters were located on Oosterkade. In the nineteenth century, alleys and ditches were constructed along Ooster- and Westerkade. Around 1930, the sloping embankment of Oosterkade was replaced by a steep quay.
