The Oosterdok is a water in Amsterdam. It came into being in 1832 when the construction of the Oosterdoksdam separated this part of the IJ from the IJ and as a result there was no ebb and flow in the IJ, which at that time was still in open connection with the Zuiderzee. On the east side the enclosed water plain that is now called Oosterdok came into being. On the west side the Westerdok came into being in a similar way.
The south bank of the IJ with the later Prins Hendrikkade came by the construction of the railway in 1874 behind the later station building. For the construction of the Central Station an emergency station Oosterdokseiland was built in 1874 for the then opened Oosterspoorweg to Hilversum. In 1889 the Central Station was opened. Since then the railway forms the northern boundary of the Oosterdok.
The Oosterdok has seen many developments. In the sixties of the 20th century the IJtunnel was constructed, of which the tunnel body extends far into the Oosterdok. The Oosterdokseiland, previously mainly a railway yard, was built on the south side in the 1960s with the new main post office. In 1997, built on the foundations of the IJtunnel, the science centre NEMO was opened.
