The peninsula, which lies about 20 kilometres north of Gdansk and belongs to the Kashubian region, partially separates the Bay of Gdansk from the Baltic Sea, forming Putziger Bay (Zatoka Pucka). The headland is between 200 metres and three kilometres wide and is protected from the sea by three rows of dunes up to 25 metres high. The narrowest parts of the headland are near Władysławowo and Kuźnica.
At the end of the Second World War, from March 1945, the peninsula was the last place of refuge for German units and civilian refugees, as the elongated peninsula, which was only one to two kilometres wide, was easy to defend militarily.
