Doel is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a subdivision of Beveren. Doel is located in the extreme northeast of the province, on the left bank of the Scheldt, in the polders of the Waasland, near the Dutch border. In the Walloon dialects the village is called "Den Doel". Doel became famous in the sixties because of expansion plans for the port of Antwerp that would make the village disappear. Since 1998 there are plans for a new dock across the village.
Doel was until 1977 an independent municipality with a surface area of 25,61 km² and had in 1972 about 1300 inhabitants. On 31 December 2007 Doel still had 388 inhabitants, on 31 December 2014 only 147. Doel also includes the village centre, the hamlets Ouden Doel, Rapenburg and Saftingen. The Prosperhaven (this is the harbour of Prosperpolder) and De Schoof are also part of Doel. Just north of the village is the Doel nuclear power plant, which supplies electricity to customers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. (Source: Wikipedia
