About the artwork

According to Greek mythology, Pegasus or Pigasos was a winged horse. Pegasus was born of the blood of Medusa. His father was Poseidon. According to the myth, Pegasus jumped out of Medusa's neck when Perseus beheaded her. Pegasus flew to Mount Helicon, where the nine Muses lived.

Redon turned fifty and used a colorful world of oil and pastel. The drawn objects also change from bizarre creatures created by unique illusions to flowers and the mythical world. Among them were the Centaur, Apollon in a tank and Pegasus.

The figure of the muse who rides on Pegasus in this work reaches the northern lights (aurora) when the source of the iconography is traced. On the other hand, the muse is a god of poetry that inspires artists, but the hippocrane fountain (the Horse Fountain), whose muses are said to drink the water of their poetic inspiration, arose after Pegasus' hoof. Helios is a god of light and is often equated with the patron god of music, Apollon, and Pegasus was a virtuous symbol that overcomes evil through spiritual indoctrination. Against this background, this work is probably because Redon, who loved poetry, painting and the power of knowledge.

Odilon Redon (Bordeaux, 20 April 1840 - Paris, 6 July 1916) was a French painter considered to be a symbolist. Redon's work seems to depict a dream world.
