About ‘Obereversand – Light over the mudflats’ by Lex Schulte

A tranquil evening on the North Sea coast, where the last warm light of the day bathes the Wadden Sea region in gold and pink. The striking silhouette of the Obereversand Lighthouse stands out powerfully against the colourful sky, whilst the mirror-like water reflects the lighthouse almost as if it were a second reality. The combination of the cool blue of the sky, the warm hues of the sunset and the calm water creates an atmospheric and timeless image.
What makes this photograph special is, above all, the tranquillity and sense of space. The lighthouse forms a striking graphic element in the sweeping landscape, whilst the reflection adds extra depth and symmetry to the composition. An image that beautifully captures the characteristic atmosphere of the German Wadden Sea.
The Obereversand was built in 1886/87 as the Eversand-Oberfeuer and, together with other lighthouses, served as an important navigational aid for shipping through the Buiten-Weser. The tower served as a navigation light until 1923. After that, it was retained as a rescue beacon in the Wurster Watt.
In March 2003, the historic tower undertook a remarkable journey: it was moved in its entirety from the mudflats to Dorum-Neufeld, where it now stands at the end of the harbour pier. Today, the Obereversand is a recognisable symbol of Dorum-Neufeld and offers visitors views across the Waddenland and the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea.
