The Aurora Borealis occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth's magnetic field and ionosphere, causing a release of energy in the form of light. The colors of the Northern Lights are caused by different gases in the Earth's atmosphere, such as oxygen and nitrogen, being ionized by these charged particles.
