North American TF-51D Mustang.
Civilian registration: NL20TF.
Serial number: 67-14866.
This TF-51D Mustang is a two-seat training aircraft of the highly ranged P-51 Mustang.
The North American P-51 Mustang became one of the most successful aircraft in the world. At the start of the air war over occupied Europe, the bombers suffered heavy losses at the hands of Luftwaffe fighters. The Allies desperately needed an escort fighter that could stay with the bombers deep into enemy territory on every mission from start to finish. The Mustang was the ideal aircraft for this purpose. After the arrival of the P-51, losses were significantly reduced. The B and C versions of the P-51 were the first fighters to escort Allied bombers all the way to Germany and back. The P-51 Mustang and its pilots saved countless lives in the air and on the ground and contributed greatly to turning the tide of the war.
