Nils Dardel (1888-1943) was a Swedish painter who is best known for his colourful, surreal and often grotesque works. He was part of the Parisian art scene of the 1910s and 1920s and was strongly influenced by modernism, symbolism and naïve art. One of his most famous works is The Dying Dandy (1918), which explores the conflict between beauty and mortality. Dardel's art is playful, dramatic and often has a melancholy undertone.
