About "Nijmegen wakes up #3"

About the artwork

Nijmegen wakes up with a beautiful sunrise above the high water in the river Waal. In January 2021, for the first time since the redesign of the Waal quay and the construction of the secondary channel, there was a very high water. The water level in the Waalhaven stood at just under 12 metres above sea level at its peak.
Nijmegen is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland, close to the border with Germany. In terms of population, Nijmegen is the largest city in Gelderland and also the tenth largest city in the Netherlands. The city is mainly located on the south bank of the river Waal, at the foot of a moraine. The so-called Waalsprong is located north of the river, an area that includes a new housing estate in the village of Lent and a large new housing estate south of the Overbetuwe village of Oosterhout. Nijmegen, together with some other municipalities in the area such as Wijchen, Beuningen and Berg en Dal, has always been part of the Rijk van Nijmegen. Nijmegen has a long history that goes back more than 2000 years. As Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum it received market rights around the year 100. In 1230 Nijmegen became a free imperial town, and in 1402 a hansa town. After Nijmegen had already housed a Quaternary Academy between 1655 and 1679, the city has been a university city since the arrival of the Catholic University (the present Radboud University) in 1923. Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands.
