About ‘Night over St. Pauli: Reflected neon hearts’ by Nils Steiner

With this shot, I deliberately decided against a classic long shot of the Reeperbahn and instead focused on a fleeting detail that symbolises the atmosphere of the neighbourhood. I captured the reflection of red neon sign hearts on a dark, rain-soaked car roof in order to interpret the lights of the big city in an abstract way.

Technically, I worked with an open aperture to dissolve the background into a soft, diffuse bokeh of colourful lights. This draws the viewer's attention to the sharp contours of the red hearts in the foreground, which stand in stark contrast to the deep black of the reflective surface.

For me, this picture conveys the mood of a night in St Pauli - mysterious, urban and vibrant - but in a calm, aesthetic visual language. It is the ideal mural for lovers of street photography who want to add a modern, urban accent to their living room or bar area.
