Nieuwegracht in Utrecht between Paulusbrug and Pausdambrug. On the far left you can see the Hofpoort. As its name suggests, the Nieuwegracht is newer than the Oudegracht. Together with the Kromme Nieuwegracht, the Drift and the Plompetorengracht, the canal was realised between 1390 and 1393 through a little built-up area within the city walls, probably to improve the drainage of the area in preparation for the construction of buildings.
