Recess with prayer wheels and statues, Tibet.
On the way to the top of the mountain you will find prayer wheels in this monastery complex.
A prayer wheel is a cylindrical mill that rotates around a vertical axis. On the outside of the cylinder is always a prayer or a mantra written.
According to Tibetan Buddhism, turning a prayer wheel has the same effect as saying the relevant prayers or mantras. When someone starts to turn, he must pronounce the inscription. It needs to be said again when he's done turning. In the intervening period, the mill may be turned as often and quickly as you like.
A commonly used inscription is the mantra: Om mani padme hum.
