This is the scaly ink mushroom, Coprinus comatus. It was just standing in the summer forest in August, along a path. Everything was green and sultry, and among all those summer colours suddenly stood this symbol of autumn. A new guest arrives.
Mushrooms can emerge all year round, as long as there is moisture, food and warmth. Those three conditions happen to come together in autumn, which is why you see mushrooms for that season. I found this scaly ink mushroom in August. Before that, it had rained for weeks and the forest was wet and and sultry. Still, I put this mushroom in the autumn collection among the others, because with mushrooms, people mainly think of autumn anyway.
