In the heart of the Sinai Desert, surrounded by rugged mountains and vast plains, lie these mysterious round stone structures: the nawamis. They are among the oldest known stone buildings in Egypt and are dated to around 4000 to 3150 BC. Their distinctive shape and construction technique, with openings to the west, raise questions about their function; possibly tombs or ritual sites.
Three nawamis take centre stage in this composition, bathed in the warm light of the late afternoon sun. The soft earth tones of sand, stone and sky form a harmonious colour palette. The desolation of the place enhances the timeless character of these structures.
This image brings together the atmosphere of silence, history and wonder. It invites reflection on human traces in an inhospitable landscape and the resilience of ancient civilisations that left monuments in even the most remote areas.
