In this painting, Nardo di Cione condensed different aspects of Marian iconography: the Madonna Queen of Heaven, the pregnant Madonna with one hand on her pregnant belly and in the other a book symbolizing the Old Testament, the Madonna clothed with the sun.
Nardo di Cione (died ca. 1366) was an Italian painter, sculptor and architect from Florence. He was the brother of the more talented Andrea di Cione, named Orcagna, as well as Jacopo di Cione; they were important members of the Florence painter's guild. Although Orcagna is considered the more accomplished artist, Nardo developed his own unique style, described as "a pronounced lyrical vein, a sense of poetic values, strong human sympathies and a great sensitivity to color as a means of subtle differentiation and gentle modeling". .
