Anyone approaching the city of Naples from the sea by boat will head straight for the impressive Castel Nuovo. The 13th century castle is one of the most important buildings in the city. The castle was both a fortress and a royal residence.
The city of Naples is unique. The centre of Naples consists of a maze of narrow, dark alleyways with a charm all of their own. The layout of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still corresponds to that of the Greek colony of Neapolis and visitors can follow the ancient streets. In some places, the remains of the old city walls and city gates are still clearly recognisable.
