The Ro stands for "rotary piston", just as the K in the VW K 70 stands for piston. The Ro 80 was then built in Neckarsulm by NSU Motorenwerke AG, from 1969: Audi NSU Auto Union AG (from 1 January 1985 Audi AG).
The Wankel engine, named after its inventor Felix Wankel ( was first conceived in 1932 and was only used after 1960 in an NSU Prinz III with the designation KKM 250. For serial use in Germany then in the NSU Wankel Spyder (1964-1967).
