Nature as inspiration....
This time the Cup Moss (Cladonia fimbriata) is a lichen from the genus Cladonia.
It grows on various surfaces such as stone, trees, wood and sometimes it also grows on rotted wood or at the base of tree trunks in light-rich locations.
In the Netherlands, it is a fairly common species. It lives in symbiosis with the alga Trebouxioid.
The hollow stems of the lichen, which are about 2 centimetres long, end quite suddenly in goblet- to funnel-shaped cups.
These cups are up to about 4 mm wide and remarkably regular in shape.
Both stems and cups are covered with fine soredia, giving them a mealy appearance1.
Cup moss is found throughout Europe on sandy and sandy loam soils.
