The hare pictured is a jackass hare, also called California jackass hare (Lepus californicus). It is one of the largest species of jackrabbits in the family Leporidae. It is common in the western United States (north to Idaho, east to Kansas) and northern Mexico and lives primarily in dry habitats, semi-deserts, steppes, and prairies. With a head-torso length of 49 to 55 centimeters and a body weight of 1.5 to 3.6 kilograms, the jackass hare is one of the larger representatives of the true hares.
