About the artwork

The Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes is a Dutch dune and Natura 2000 area between Zandvoort (province of North Holland) and the Langevelderslag in the municipality of Noordwijk (province of South Holland). The dune area is designed to extract drinking water for the city of Amsterdam; fifty million cubic metres of drinking water flow through this 3,400-hectare area every year. Water has been extracted there since 1853, making it the oldest water extraction area in the Netherlands. It is operated by Waternet. The dune area is a protected natural monument and notified to the European Commission as a Habitats Directive area. As such, it enjoys protection under European regulations. Peace, space and nature are the main core values of this area. To ensure this, only walking is allowed. You may also walk anywhere outside the paths. At 3400 hectares, the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes are one of the largest continuous walking areas in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes attract around a million visitors every year. This makes it one of the most visited attractions in the Netherlands.
