This work shows the monumental old Morspoort on the edge of the center of Leiden. The gate dates from 1669 and is in very good condition. This picture is one of a series of pictures of the Morspoort and can be ordered in color as well as in black and white.
About the city of Leiden: Leiden is an old city with much history. The undisputed oldest part is the Burcht which dates from 1150. The castle is probably much older and there may already have been a defensive structure around 450 AD. The Old Rhine River flows through Leiden and discharges further on into the sea. Thanks to the cloth industry, Leiden was one of the largest cities in the Northern Netherlands from the late Middle Ages until the 17th century. Leiden was also the site of the first protestant church, the Marekerk with its round dome.
