Monument for a Wullok
Wullok is the West Flemish word for whelk. These shells grow according to the rules of the Golden Ratio, so each shell, regardless of its size, has a flawlessly balanced ratio between its starting point and end point. The artist Stief DeSmet set himself the task of recreating a whelk according to its natural shape. His study of the whelk fits into his fascination with nature as a superior 'maker' to man and artist.
This sculpture is part of the triennial Beaufort edition 2018. Photo taken at Ostend, at the end of the Western Breakwater on 27 July 2024.
