About "Monument Valley, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park of the Navajo Indians"

About the artwork

The valley, situated on the Colorado Plateau at an altitude of about 1700 metres above sea level, consists of sandstone and siltstone and owes its characteristic red colour to the iron oxide present in the soil. Because of erosion of the soil, sandstone formations have formed that are between 100 and 300 metres high and bear names such as East and West Mitten, Totem Pole and Three Sisters.
Monument Valley is probably one of the most photographed areas of America. The scenery of the red rock formations and the surrounding desert has served as a set in many a western and documentary about the Wild West. Among the films shot here are the 1939 John Ford-directed film Stagecoach starring John Wayne, Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West and Clint Eastwood's The Eiger Sanction. Ford would make nine more films in the area. Back to the Future III was also partially shot here. Monument Valley has also featured in television films and series, advertising campaigns and travel brochures as the symbol of the West.
Goulding, which was founded as a trading post in 1923, is the only town of any significance. The visitor centre of the Monument Valley Tribal Park is housed here. It is managed by the Navajo tribe.
