The Monastery of St Stepanos or St Stephen is an Armenian monastery near the Iranian city of Djolfa, near the Araxe River, in East Azerbaijan province.
It is dedicated to the first Christian martyr, Stephen.
Perhaps built in the 7th century it was closed with certainty on the x th century. It was rebuilt many times in the following centuries, and current date elements for most of the xvii e and xix e centuries. It was an important cultural centre for Armenians and hosted religious figures, calligraphers, painters, writers, philosophers and historians. Some illuminated manuscripts produced or copied at the monastery are now kept at the Matenadaran in Yerevan, or at the Mkhitarist cultural centre in Venice.
