The famous Moeraki Boulders (boulders) in New Zealand
About 40 km south of Oamaru are the Moeraki Boulders. These unusual round boulders are scattered across the beach. The Maori believe these were food baskets and water jars taken by their ancestors on their journeys in the canoe. They slipped overboard, washed up on shore and then petrified. The boulders were formed on the seabed more than 60 million years ago, when lime salts gradually accumulated around a hard core. They sit in the soft rock along the waterline and as the waves pound against it, they emerge. Some boulders are as much as 3-4 metres in diameter.
