About "Misty sunrise at the Tower of Ransdorp 2"

About the artwork

Ransdorp is a village (and until 1921 independent municipality) in Landelijk Noord, the sparsely populated rural part in the north of the municipality of Amsterdam, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The village has a protected villagescape, and counts several national monuments, including the tower of Ransdorp.

The tower of Ransdorp is a monumental, unfinished, richly detailed late Gothic tower 32 meters high from 1525 in Ransdorp in Amsterdam-North. It is the tower of the Church of Ransdorp. From the flat top of the tower there is a view of the vast polder land of Landelijk Noord.

The location has a history dating back to the Middle Ages. The tower is a reminder of the flourishing shipping, trade and activity that Ransdorp knew especially in the fifteenth century. The tower was built between 1502 and 1542 in Gothic style to a design by Jan Poyt. In 1542 the money ran out, so it was no longer possible to build the spire. The Church of Ransdorp built against it is from 1719.

Ransdorp, together with Durgerdam and Holysloot, forms part of a silence area. This is a location for cycling and walking recreation. The old village centers and the open quiet character of the rural area make it a cultural-historical crowd-puller.
