The wild plant blooms from June to August with small, bright blue flowers surrounded by a wreath (winding) of feathery bracts. The sepals are coloured blue, while the petals are reduced and sit at the base of the stamens. The flower has honey glands, which lure bumblebees and bees for pollination.
