Kinderdijk windmills
The Kinderdijk windmills are considered a unique piece of world culture and are therefore listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex consists of 19 windmills that show how important the Dutch were in controlling water. Since the Middle Ages, they built waterworks to keep farmland and villages dry. These waterworks are still maintained to this day. The area is home to dykes, reservoirs, pumping stations, administrative buildings and the 19 well-preserved windmills. Despite being decommissioned in 1950, the windmills still function as reserves in case modern facilities fail. This photo was taken on a threatening day, early in the morning. Although we came for the sunrise, we unfortunately did not see it. But we were treated to beautiful dark cloud cover. We thought we would get rained on, but fortunately it was not as bad as we thought and the sun still shone between the clouds in the end.
Alone or together with Albert and our dogs I go out to take pictures.
I like this so much that I don't mind getting up early to photograph a sunrise or going through all kinds of weather.
