Milky way over Flatvarp
Stora Askö is an island in the northern Tjust archipelago in Loftahammar parish (before 1952 in Östra Eds parish) in Västervik municipality. With its 11 square kilometres, the island is Småland's largest island by surface area. And the northernmost built-up archipelago island in Kalmar county.
The settlements on the island are divided into three villages; Askö village, Ytterby and Flatvarp. Today (2017) there are approximately 300 built-up properties on the island, the greater part being late leisure properties. The number of agricultural properties is 12-13. but has historically been far more. In 2017, there are still three active farms with cattle left. The permanent population is around 40 people, but in summer the population multiplies to around 1,300 people.
Today, the island has a car workshop, a construction company and a summer kiosk in Askö village. At Skärsmaren farm in Ytterby there is a fish smokehouse and a sales stall.
