About "Mexican sugar skull with roses"

by Colette van der Wal

About the artwork

WORK:
The 'Day of the Dead' (Dia de los muertos) is an important Mexican day of celebration and remembrance. On this day, the indigenous peoples of Mexico revere their ancestors. Sugar skulls are the universal symbol of the 'Day of the Dead'.
This work shows a large sugar skull decorated with ribbons and roses. Nowhere meant to frighten but before anything else a loving reverence for our ancestors.

MATERIALS USED IN THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK:
Mixed Media.
In this work, I used different materials such as: Watercolour, Markers, ink, watercolour pencils and pencil.

INSPIRATION:
Years ago, I backpacked through Mexico.
Especially in the interior, I was forever captivated by the beautiful and colourful culture of the indigenous peoples living there. I have forever locked these impressions in my mind and heart. Since then, I have created several works focusing on Mexican culture and the indigenous tribes.
