The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR (W 196 S) has certainly become the best-known classic car, as the Uhlenhaupt coupé was auctioned by Sotheby's in May 2022 in the closed Mercedes-Benz Museum in front of selected regular customers and enthusiasts for the record sum of 135 million euros.
However, the picture above is a replica that largely corresponds to the 2-seater that was used in road races in 1955, including with the starting number #722 Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson as co-driver. Juan Manuel Fangio was the sole driver in the other SLR with the #658. Both cars won the first two places in the 1955 Mille Miglia.
First place with Stirling Moss in just 10:07:48.000 and Juan Manuel Fangio in second place with a driving time of 10:39:33.000 hours.
