About ‘Memory of ancestors in the rice fields’ by Frank Photos

In this rural Vietnamese landscape near Hoi An, the eye is drawn to the richly decorated family tombs, set in the middle of a freshly harvested rice field. The short stalks and black markings bear witness to a common practice: burning the remains of harvests to prepare the land for a new cycle.
The tombs, often built in the heart of farmland, bear witness to a deep bond between the living and their ancestors. These monuments, meticulously painted and decorated, are both a tribute to the deceased and a way of keeping their presence as close as possible to where they live and work. Vietnamese spirituality, mingled with Confucianism and ancestor worship, is expressed here with force and poetry.
The striking contrast between the scorched earth, the young green shoots and the vibrantly coloured funerary buildings reflects the beauty of a culture where the cycles of life and nature are intimately linked. This landscape tells the story of a living countryside, rooted in respect for tradition and the hope of perpetual renewal.
