About ‘Melchior d' Hondecoeter, Chickens and ducks’
Melchior d' Hondecoeter, Chickens and ducks, c. 1680 Hondecoeter was a specialist in painting poultry. Here the birds are startled by a barking dog, which appears on the left. A pied rooster steps away on high legs, the white duck protects her chicks, a dove flies up in a hurry. The painting belongs to the work with geese and ducks that also hangs here. Both come from the property of the family of Orange-Nassau and hung in the 18th century in Schloss Oranienstein in Diez, Germany.
