A meerkat (or suricate) stands on its four legs with its head slightly down. It is standing slightly left of center in the photo.
In his mouth you can see the legs of a large baboon spider, which he just dug up himself. The background (and whole background of the photo) is beige and cream sand of the desert, with very short, dry and arid grass. As a result, the whole photo is in these soft tones, in late evening light.
