This photograph shows the view from the Möllenvogteigarten to Magdeburg Cathedral. Magdeburg is a central German city on the Elbe and the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The Gothic cathedral of Magdeburg is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. It is the first Gothic cathedral to be designed from the outset and the earliest to be completed on German soil. Construction began in 1207. In the immediate vicinity of Magdeburg Cathedral, tucked away at the northern exit of the Remtergang, you will find the garden of the Möllenvogtei. Its history goes back to the time when Magdeburg's old town centre was formed, making it one of the oldest gardens in the city. The garden has probably hardly changed since the Middle Ages, so visitors can still see a piece of original Magdeburg here. The garden's special features include the valuable tree population, the niches set into the inner wall of the Zwingermauer, a stone staircase leading up to the remains of the Gangolphi Chapel and a simple fountain. The name Möllenvogtei (Moellen Bailiwick) probably derives from a nearby mill and the seat of the archbishop's bailiff.
